When time dies
Characters
Louie – The father
Peta – Louie’s daughter
Naomi – Louie’s daughter, Peta’s little sister
Francis and Robert – Louie’s sons
Robinson – Louie’s friend
Act 1
[Louie Gallo walks furiously out of his limo. Naomi and Peta are sitting on the sidewalk. Both tremble in fear after the gunning at their old house.  There are five cars park along the streets, and all of which are broken and decorated with holes on them. Corpses lie around like a drunken after-party. People on the streets are mumbling about the shooting incident. Louie makes a quick glance around. After several minutes, three men walk out with Robert’s corpse. Two other men follow the three and guide the wounded Francis into the backseat. Louie stares at Francis as he enters the car, but Francis never looks up. The police have yet to come. Louie hurries his men as he approaches the crying Naomi.]
Louie
[Looking at Naomi]. What is this hellish doing?
Naomi
[sobbing gasps breaking in between] Francis had gone mad. He rampaged over the street before storming into our old house. Robert followed him through and tried to stop him.
Louie
Why is Peta here?
Naomi
She followed Robert. I told her not to but she persisted.
[Peta, sitting next to Naomi, looks soulless. Her fingers are still shaking from the fear, and her eyes are continuously scanning the crowd. The mob starts to grow thicker. Police siren can be heard from far away. Louie hurries his two daughters into his limo and escapes the scene quickly.]
Act 2
After giving Francis a good beating, Louie persuades him to think about his own action and ask for forgiveness. Francis refuses and the beating continues. [Back in the mansion, Peta is standing next to the main stairs, looking at her mother’s portrait. Louie, after walking back from the prosecution room (a small warehouse behind the mansion), spots Peta and approaches her.]
Louie
My deepest apology, Peta. I know mother would be so sad if she’s still alive to witness the betrayal of her own two sons. I promise you and Naomi that there will be no more of this nonsense within our family!
Peta
And how exactly will you carry out your promise?
Louie
Bad children need punishment. If they refuse to learn, they’re nothing more than castaways. I am giving Francis twenty-four hours to confess his crime and be alive. Normally, Omerta does not allow such leeway; you can say that I’m rather generous. After the time passes, I can no longer guarantee his life if he persists.
Peta
Do you think mother would like to see that? Mother and I had spent so many nights talking about love and forgiveness, about those fairytales that you once called trash [raises voice]. How can you be so generous with Francis, but not mother? You are here judging Francis and saving your reputation, but you haven’t given me, Naomi or your sons a thought about mother’s death.
Louie
Silence you infamita! [furious]. I didn’t raise you to fucking talk like that. You only have your worth and whatever else you care about. If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be living in this luxurious mansion. If I didn’t care, none of you will even be alive right now. I put all my trust and care into this family, and expect nothing but love and gratitude. But instead, I’m stuck with this brotherly dispute crap. Francis killed Robert, his own fucking brother, to secure mother’s treasure for himself. I don’t know why you’d go and protect this boy, but I surely don’t give a fuck about his life no more. And you better find yourself a good Turk and leech him off if you want none of my shit.
Peta
[running away, sobbing]. Fine, fine!
Louie
I’ll call you up to the warehouse later. Better get your ass ready.

Act 3
[Naomi escorts Peta to the warehouse. Inside, Francis chained up, is lying on the ground like a dead man. His face is heavily deformed due to the beating. Louie stands beside Francis’s body, surrounded by guards, while looking at Naomi and Peta walking in. All the guards silently step away from Louie as Peta approaches him. Peta’s eyes turn steely after seeing Francis’s condition. Louie still keeps his eyes locked on Peta, and his face an emotionless mask.]
Peta
Are you satisfied? Must I be here to observe your mindless brutality?
Louie
Shut your trap, and save your moaning for later. Francis here doesn’t want to confess, so I’ll let Omerta speak its words. Boy [one of the guards steps forward and give Louie a box]. Now you [gives Peta the box], clip this scum.
Peta
[opens the box just to see a revolver] You mad man. Have you lost your sense? Is…is nothing else I can do to please you instead? [turns to Louie]. Please, forgive Francis!
Louie
I don’t go around taking beefs. Besides, matters await me. Think of this as a thanking gift for Robert. (Think of this as retribution for your brother)
Peta
No, I won’t do this. This is an act of a mad man. I am sane and I know mother would not be pleased with your filthy actions. No father would be pleased to see his children kill each other. No, you’re not my father! (throw the box away, tears start to flow).
Louie
Vaffanculo!  If you protect this stronza, you’re as good as dead!
Peta
Kill me then, for I wish to die with my dearest brothers!
Louie
Send her to the cage.
Naomi
Papa, please, no! Please, rethink this! Peta didn’t mean to disobey you. I…I can take the gun in her place instead. Please, papa, please forgive Peta’s childish act.
Louie
[shakes her off] Idiots! All of you! Naomi, one more outburst like that and I’ll rip your goddamn tongue out. Send Peta to the fucking cage. Now!

Naomi
Papa, no! Papa, please, no! [Cries as the guards take Peta to the cage and chain up Francis].

Act 4
Two days have passed since the day of the incident. Peta is locked inside a small underground cell, starving. There is no sunlight, and rats run free, spreading an odor of sickness and death. Naomi secretly enters the underground cell to give Peta food. Peta refuses, however, and tells Naomi to forget about her and all of the wrong Louie has done. After a small conversation, Naomi exits the underground cell but leaves the basket of food for Peta. Back in the mansion, Robinson, an old friend of Louie, comes to visit. Robinson decides to share his feelings about Louie’s wife’s death and the loss of his three children. Robinson, however, has come with a warning.
Robinson
How come you look so well? I thought with all of these disputes [ruffles Louie’s hair] you would’ve been grey by now.
Louie
[Chuckles]. Always with the jokes. [change in facial expression] Sadly, I don’t have time for child’s play. You know I’m the Don, and my job is not to go around and keep this world happy. If I have time to fuck around with some toys then I rather gather some breads and whip some banana races. I don’t mind having a fucking Cafone walking around, but he better behave, and you know the rest.
Robinson
Lawful as you are, have you truly spent any time with your family?  I’m no wop, but in America, even gangsters have family, y’ know. It’s quite disappointing to know you don’t give as much of
a shit about yours.
Louie
Cazzo, stop giving me them stupid lecture. What have I done to deserve this disrespect, especially from you? Of course I love my family, but if I wasn’t the Don, none of them would be living in this blessed house [gesturing to room]. Protection from harm, protection from fear; to hell with all these protections, I give and I give but it’s still never enough. What am I missing? What do they want from me? Blessed men don’t know their values until they finally lose them, but in this case they don’t because I keep everything together.
Robinson
And that is where you fail, my friend. Ambition takes its whole against your will and you never knew when. This is probably why your wife ended her life. Much more sorrow will be brought upon you and your family. For a man of your caliber to succumb his heart to power and the heartless Omerta, you are but a body with no soul. You have never truly experienced misfortune for yourself, but now you will.
Louie
Silent! Say no more of that nonsense [fearful].
Robinson
[Pause]. Have I ever lied?
Louie
[fear more noticeable]. No, not to me at least…
Robinson
Then what would I get from lying to you no? Self-esteem? I’m far better than you in all aspects. I am more prosperous than you are. I have a life, and a family, and they’re all waiting eagerly for my return. Are any of them, waiting for you? Oh right, the Omerta, a non-fucking-existing holy order, is your only “family.” By every second you spend grinding your power, you lose both life and family bit, by bit. Without the Omerta, you are useless, like a rich man without money, like a puppet without strings.
Louie
Is there a chance? [Grabs Robinson] Is there a way for me to stop losing them? Is there a way for my wife to love me once more? [Trembles in fear]
Robinson
Your choice.

One of the guards suddenly busts in. They bring news that Francis has escaped and killed many guards along the way. [During the mist of uncertainty, Robinson tells Louie to make his move and make it fast. Without any word, Louie tells the guard to ready a car and take him to where Peta is.] Upon entering the doorway to the underground cell, there are corpses everywhere. The cell is overwhelmed with death’s odor. When Louie enters the cell, Francis is holding a motionless Peta in his arms. A trail of blood pours from her mouth, indicating that Peta killed herself not long ago. Francis picks up his guns and starts cursing and shooting at Louie. The guards die protecting Louie while he takes out the same revolver that was meant to kill Francis, serving its purpose. [After the crisis, Louie hurries to one of the surviving guards, and orders him to drive him back to the mansion.] The remaining guards gather the bodies back to the warehouse.
Louie
Naomi, where are you?

Act 5
[After heading back to the mansion, Louie rushes into Naomi’s room to see a pale body bathing in a bloody pool on her bed. Louie embraces Naomi’s body tightly and screams and curses his own selfishness. He notices a small letter next to the knife and starts reading it. With worthless effort and a broken family, Louie walks up to the window, takes a moment of silent and ends his life with his revolver. ]
“Father,
It’s been a while since the last time I saw you smiled. Have things troubled you that much? I wonder what they could be, and I don’t mind doing my best to help you out. Not just I, but everyone in the family. Mom, brothers, Peta and I, we’re always there to help. What troubles you? You once told me I’m your best friend, and best friends are supposed to be there for each other. What am I to you now? Has pride gotten the better of yours? I’ve tried so hard to recover you from misfortune, from those times that you became a mad man, but I guess I’m not good enough. Mother awaits me, but I deny her to stay with you. I guess nothing really matters now that you’ve pushed me to my end. By the time you read this letter, I’m probably watching from above with mother. I want to send this last regard of mine to you. I wish you luck, fortune and a bright future. Please, I don’t want to see your frown anymore. Go and relive your life, a life with sunshine and flower, a life of fairytales.”
When Time Dies
*a bit of strong language but insignificant
an adaptation of Antigone for my class
i'm thinking of making a comic/manga out of this story of mine if adequate regard is met from the audience (readers)
hope to receive some feedbacks for both the story and the idea of making this into a comic/manga
